Powered by AWS Bedrock under an enterprise agreement with the University of Montana. This provides access to leading foundation models—including Anthropic, OpenAI, and Meta—without exposing institutional data to public APIs.

Register with your Montana University System email address. Every student, faculty, and staff member across all campuses gets equal access to the same AI tools.

What is ChatMT.ai?

ChatMT.ai is a chat interface that gives MUS faculty, staff, and students access to leading AI models in a safe, sandboxed environment. It runs on AWS Bedrock and is available across all Montana University System schools.

Who can use it?

ChatMT.ai is available to anyone affiliated with an MUS school, including faculty, staff, and students.

How do I get access?

Go to my.chatmt.ai and log in with your university email address.

I haven't received my email verification after registering. What should I do?

Email delivery can take up to 10 minutes when verifying your email address. Please wait for the email to arrive when registering for your initial account.

Are we required to use it?

No. ChatMT.ai is available to use, but it is not required. It's there if you want it.

Why does this exist? Why can't I just go purchase a license from one of the major AI companies?

You can, and nothing about ChatMT.ai restricts you from doing so. The reason this exists is to make leading AI models available to anyone in the MUS who wants to use them, experiment, and be curious in a safe sandbox environment, without anyone needing to purchase their own license to get started.

Will I be billed for using ChatMT.ai?

No. There is no cost to you as a user. ChatMT.ai is provided as a shared service for the MUS, and usage is covered centrally.

Does it cost something to run? Do different models cost different amounts?

Yes. ChatMT.ai runs on a pay-per-use basis through AWS Bedrock, and different models have different underlying costs. Lighter, faster models are inexpensive to run and are well-suited for everyday tasks. Frontier models (the most capable ones) are significantly more expensive per use. We make a range of models available so you can match the model to the task. If you're doing something straightforward, picking a lighter model helps stretch the shared resource further for everyone.

Will my data be used to train the models?

No. ChatMT.ai runs through our enterprise AWS Bedrock environment, which means your conversations and data are not used to train the underlying models.

Can I put PII, FERPA-protected data, or other sensitive information into ChatMT.ai?

You should use judgment when entering any sensitive information. ChatMT.ai includes some automated filtering for common forms of structured sensitive data, such as Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, and passwords. That filtering is a safety net, not a substitute for good practice. It does not cover the full scope of FERPA-protected student records, HIPAA-protected health information, sensitive research data, or other categories of confidential information. As a general rule, do not paste in anything you would not be comfortable handling through other university-approved tools.

If I graduate or leave the university, can I still access ChatMT.ai?

Access is tied to your active MUS affiliation. Inactive accounts are deleted after one year.
